The spirit of our work at Catholic Charities is rooted in Catholic Social Teaching leading us not only to provide direct services for vulnerable people, but also to advocate for them and give voice to their concerns and needs. We provide support for Catholic parishes in their work of service and advocacy and work with community partners and interfaith religious leaders on a variety of justice issues.
Our staff are active in local, state and national advocacy efforts, and share their stories and perspectives on the issues our clients are facing on our blog.

Labor laws prevent children from working in factories or offices but allow children as young as 12 to work unlimited hours on farms outside of school with parental permission. Too many children working in agriculture are children of migrant workers, working to supplement their parents’ poverty-level wages.

Electronic Recycling Event in Henrietta
Residents can drop-off and properly dispose of electronic devices free of charge between 8:30 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. at Monroe Community College, 1000 E. Henrietta Road, Student Lot M-1.

Events like this are a great way to safely dispose of old, unwanted electronics and protect our environment at the same time.
Televisions, computers and other electronics contain materials that are not safe to put in landfills and under state law it is illegal to put these items out to the curb with your regular trash.
Sunnking will accept almost all devices that have a circuit board or a cord, including; computers and computer accessories, printers, ink and toner cartridges, monitors, televisions, microwave ovens, copiers and fax machines, telephones, radios, video and audio equipment and most small appliances. Items not accepted include refrigerators, air conditioners, de-humidifiers, and televisions and monitors with broken glass. The company also limits TV’s and monitors to four per vehicle.

Suicide Awareness Event
Nazareth College and St. John Fisher are teaming up to bring a mental health advocate and suicide survivor to St. John Fisher Campus. Kevin Hines survived a suicide attempt where he jumped from the Golden Gate Bridge; now he spreads a message of hope and recovery to those struggling with mental health and suicidal thoughts. Kevin will share his story of hope during a lecture at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 18, in Cleary Family Auditorium in Kearney Hall at St. John Fisher University. The event is free and open to the Fisher and Nazareth communities; seating is first come, first served.

Our first in-person Salt and Light Gathering for leaders under 40 in a long time will focus on questions of work, relationships, faith, and wholeness after the COVID shutdown in these tough times. We are bringing together four remarkable Catholic leaders with differing expertise and experience—a Notre Dame philosophy professor who teaches popular classes on this topic, a Boston College psychology professor who teaches and researches mentoring and youth purpose, a Catholic advocacy director, and a young professional living in Washington, DC—to explore what fulfilling work, relationships, faith, and lives mean today.

Mott has said that the novel was inspired by police brutality in recent years and what it means for a black man to keep himself safe in America during this time of renewed prejudice and acts of hate.
“I’d like to dedicate this award to all the other mad kids, to all the outsiders, the weirdos, the bullied, the ones so strange that they had no choice but to be misunderstood by the world and by those around them,” Mott said in his (2021 National Book Award) acceptance speech. "... the ones who, in spite of this, refuse to outgrow their imagination, refuse to abandon their dreams and refuse to deny, diminish their identity or their truth or their loves.”

Rochester and communities across Monroe County are ready to move forward with a green economy that benefits all of us. But three years after the passage of New York’s Landmark Climate Law, New York state still isn’t funding climate and environmental justice. This year we’re fighting to change that!
At the campaign launch we’ll have local legislators, environmental leaders and faith leaders calling on the state to invest in a future that is more liveable and healthy not just for the few, but for the many. We’ll stand with New Yorkers at rallies across the state demanding the state fund the promises of climate and environmental justice made law in 2019. And if this package passes, it could bring real climate investments to Rochester, including good-paying jobs that will help lift people out of poverty even as we transform our energy sector.
